Sad to see

Arthur Finkelstein, the political guru who helped create George Pataki, now wants to Swift Boat-ize Hillary Clinton. Senior New York Republicans say he’s creating a political action committee called “Stop Her Now”—all you need is the pronoun with this crowd, apparently—which will attempt to raise more than $10 million nationwide to use against Her during Her 2006 reelection campaign.

The PAC will “bloody her up long before her presidential run,” vows a top state Republican, adding the model is indeed the Swift Boat Vets. Stop Her Now will bludgeon Clinton with ads, whether or not the New York GOP has found a candidate to take her on, which is looking increasingly difficult.

Do these people have a life???

Senate Republicans are going for the ultimate power grab. They're planning to give themselves absolute power, silencing Senate Democrats (and the millions of Americans they represent) by changing the rules and traditions of the Senate and eliminating the filibuster, a two-century Senate tradition that has preserved the voice of the minority.

No more debate. No more dissent. No more checks and balances. Nothing is stopping the Republicans from ramming the Bush agenda through.

By silencing Democrats on the Senate floor, Republicans will easily approve all of President Bush's extreme right-wing judicial nominees, giving them lifetime appointments to the federal bench -- no matter what their records look like. This puts all of our values we hold dear -- civil liberties, voting rights, a woman's right to choose, education, environmental protections -- at grave risk.

The whole Republican agenda will become the law of the land because the GOP will have silenced all effective opposition.

So much for Democracy

And speaking of checks and balances did you see that diatribe on the Senate floor by John Cornyn a Texas Republican insinuating that the recent attacks on Judges is because of Judicial Activism? VERY SCARY

"I don't know if there is a cause-and-effect connection but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country. Certainly nothing new, but we seem to have run through a spate of courthouse violence recently that's been on the news and I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters on some occasions where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in - engage in violence. Certainly without any justification but a concern that I have that I wanted to share."

What is UP with Texas by the way. Is this the WACKO state now? First DeLay then this turd?

Or how bout this one?

"I'm a radical! I'm a real extremist. I don't want to impeach judges. I want to impale them" --Michael Schwartz, Chief of Staff to newly-elected Oklahoma GOP Senator Tom Coburn, last Thursday

So much for checks and balances.

The truth gentle reader is that I was once a proud Republican in the tradition of Rockefeller. Less Government, States Rights, this is what the Republican party stood for. Now my head was turned many years ago from the Republican Way by the light of truth and compassion for my fellow man. However the party did stand for certain things that today make a ton of sense.

Not any more. Despite protestations to the contrary, this party has become the party of the righteous, the indignant. It seems no means is unjustifiable to reach the ends that they believe in. It is the unavoidable result of their frankly brilliant guerilla marketing campaign they have waged at the grassroots of America for nearly 30 years. They won the game in the trenches by taking the first the towns and municipalities, then the counties and parishes, and finally the state houses. Gerrymandering fixed the House and the Senate falls as it may.

But they may be hoisted on their own petard. I hope for the sake of Democracy, and the balance of party politics that they just go nuts crazy and wake up the American Public to their nonsense. By creating a party from the grassroots that is motivated by stark right and wrong, not policies, they are now beholden to enact this "morality" no matter how much it grates against the Public at large.

Interesting fix they are getting themselves into...
